"25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! 27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home." John 19:25-27
Lessons on Duty: The account of Jesus entrusting the care of His earthly mother to John teaches us the importance of having an open and ready heart anytime Jesus calls upon us. John was ready and available to be used of the Lord; perhaps some would have understood if John only stood there and mourned. Instead, He readily obeyed and served His Lord even nigh death’s door.
Disciples of Jesus are available. Our marching orders are coming from the Lord Jesus; for John, He was on the cross. For us, He is now in heaven, wanting us to show others that same cross! All through history, God has had his servants who obeyed Him and not the world or religious institutions. Ananias helped Saul (who later became Paul) when he was blinded by the light of Christ (Acts 9:10). Ananias said to the Lord, “Behold, I am here, Lord.” Even in the Old Testament, when God went looking for volunteers, Isaiah said, “Here am I, send me.” (Isaiah 6:8) Now, He wants to send you.
Is your heart available to Him now? We need to cultivate a serving heart now; it is not enough to sing “I surrender all”; we must surrender all. The Master is waiting to use you, but He may call at any time without notice. We want to serve Him with our whole heart; wherever God has called you and whatever lot in life you find yourself – if you are a disciple of Christ, always be at attention. Peter says it this way: “be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15)
