If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious. 1 Peter 2:3
In some marathons, some runners choose to race carrying a full back pack; while that may not stop someone from finishing the race, it could slow them down from obtaining the goal. While there is something to be said of endurance training , in the Christian life – we need to be sure we are not running the race with our backpack of sin. Otherwise, it could slow us down or even stop us all together.
Since the fall of man in Genesis 3, human beings have decided that worldly things are more important than God. Yet, God says that born again Christians have “tasted that the Lord is gracious.” In another passage, the Lord invites everyone to “taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him” (Psalm 34:8). If we are allowing our sins and addictions to rule us, we have forgotten how good the Lord is; therefore, He invites us to taste of his precious treasures and see how wonderful it is to know Him.
How do we do this? We participate in God’s holiness by turning away from sin and replacing our former ways with good works and holiness. Even though modern day preachers have concocted new or novel formulas, the path to God remains the same. Some people say following God is too difficult; yet God says that His commandments are not grievous (1 John 5:3) and His burdens are always light (Matthew 11:30. So why is it so difficult? Because sin is always grievous and sin’s burdens are always heavy; so, why do we keep running with them in our backpack? Let’s ask the Lord to remove our weights and besetting sin and follow Him.
