We must understand that giving, especially to the work of missions, is the will of God. Some people are willing to give if others give, but the Philippians were an example of selfless giving. They had found Paul, they were concerned about him and gave of themselves, and in return - Paul preached the gospel! That is essentially missions: give to those with a burden to go, an watch the Kingdom grow!
